MUSIC

About

Music is a vibrant and vital part of St. Matthew’s. Highly valued by our congregation, music is foundational to many aspects of our worship services. Our 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays features choir and organ throughout most of the year (September–June). During the summer, we worship through hymns and solo music.

Music is transformative, both for those who learn and perform it and for those who listen to and reflect on it in worship. We seek to use music as an enriching force in the lives of all who hear or make it; our prayers are enhanced when expressed through music.

CHOIR

St. Matthew’s Church Choir forms the backbone of our choral music ministry. From September to June, they sing on virtually every Sunday morning as well as on certain holy days and special services. The choir comprises high schoolers, volunteer adults (many of whom have sung in St. Matthew’s choirs since childhood), and four professional section leaders. Rehearsals center around fellowship and the love of making music together, plus a time for continuing musical and spiritual growth.

All of our choirs are free to join and open to anyone, regardless of musical experience or faith background. New members are welcome at any point.

Rehearsals: Thursdays 7:30–9:00 p.m. and Sundays at 9:00 a.m. before worship. To get involved, contact Irina Georgieva, Director of Music Ministries and Organist.

OUR PIPE ORGAN

Our pipe organ dates to 2009, when St. Matthew's undertook major renovations to the Sanctuary. Accommodating an organ of this size and style was a principal reason behind the interior reconstruction; the Reuter Organ Company (Lawrence, Kansas) designed the instrument in conjunction with the new acoustic and visual properties of the space. Its public inauguration was in worship on Sunday January 31, 2010. Ken Cowan gave it its concert debut the following March. The organ is integral to worship every week. The entire community at St. Matthew’s remains grateful to the Brock family, who donated the funds for this instrument in memory of Anise McDaniel Brock, much beloved organist and music teacher. The organ was featured in the September 2010 edition of The American Organist in an article describing its genesis, design and construction.

The Arts at St. Matthew's

The Arts of St. Matthew's (AASM) is a community-focused concert series featuring diverse musical performances, including jazz trios and choral music as well as other events to celebrate beauty, deepen community connections, foster creativity, and provide artistic experiences for all ages. Part of St. Matthew’s and typically held in its Sanctuary, AASM operates independently from the church’s operating budget, relying on donations and ticket sales.

Whether you are a longtime supporter or attending for the first time, you will find yourself uplifted and enriched by these special gatherings. Together, let us celebrate the joy, wonder, and connection that only the arts can bring.

The 2025-26 season features a Brazilian Jazz trio, organ recital, joint choir concerts, an event for children to "build" a pipe organ, a Dream Workshop, and a playwright who will read two of her plays. Sign up here to receive notices of events.
