Hildegard, Bach, and Pärt — A lenten devotional concert
As you walk your lenten journey towards the cross, please join us for a free, devotional concert on Friday, March 22nd at 7:30pm. As part of The Arts at St. Matthew’s 2023–24 season, this intimate concert will offer you a moment to pray, reflect, and meditate.
Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179) was a Benedictine abbess and polymath. In addition to her vast output as a composer, she produced major works as a writer, visionary, mystic, philosopher, and medical practitioner. Her extant musical ouevre—one of the largest of any medieval composer—comprises around 70 works, including Ordo Virtutum, a sacred music drama depicting the struggle for a human soul between the Virtues and the Devil.
In this concert for voice, violin, piano, and organ, the transcendent music of Hildegard will be accompanied by similarly sublime works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt.
