Reflection: Sabbath by the Sea
A Reflection by Lisa Williams
The Society of St. Margaret in Massachusetts has mission focused sisters living an ancient tradition with a modern outlook. But what does that really mean? Honestly, I never knew the Episcopal Church had nuns. They have truly and simply created a sweet spot of combining hospitality and a holy space. A place where the trappings of everyday life easily fall away to allow one to hear God’s voice. And I heard my own voice too after my inner dialogue was forced to rest. The biggest decision of the day was what to have for breakfast in a fully stocked kitchen. That internal noise in my mind was replaced with prayer services and meals with the sisters which provided some structure, always optional, to the retreat. To that, I added journaling, a nap, and easy living in an visually beautiful home on the beach. With 9 women participating, there was an openness and vulnerability to our discussions in a space and time where we held each other up. Something I see among the St. Matthew’s parishioners again and again and again. It was a great reminder the Sabbath is written about in many places in the Bible. I don’t have to feel guilty about putting some boundaries around time for rest and rejuvenation. To hear and think about the word of God in my own mind, through living in community with the ladies of St. Matthews, and among the beautiful voices of the Sisters of St. Margaret was an experience I will never forget.
