Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179) was a Benedictine abbess and polymath. In addition to her vast output as a composer, she produced major works as a writer, visionary, mystic, philosopher, and medical practitioner. Her extant musical ouevre—one of the largest of any medieval composer—comprises around 70 works, including Ordo Virtutum, a sacred music drama depicting the struggle for a human soul between the Virtues and the Devil.
In this concert for voice, violin, piano, and organ, the transcendent music of Hildegard will be accompanied by similarly sublime works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt.
This event is free. A free-will offering will be taken at the end in support of The Arts at St. Matthew's. To purchase tickets or subscriptions for the other concerts in the 2023–24 series, click here.
All attendees are welcome to stay for a reception afterwards in the Lounge, where light refreshments will be served.
