A Holy Lent.

Dear friends and members of St. Matt’s,

Last night we gathered to celebrate communion, for the imposition of ashes, and to accept the invitation of the church to begin a holy Lent. If you weren’t with us – that’s okay! You can begin today. Or tomorrow. It’s never too late to accept the invitations of God.

Each year, as the Book of Common Prayer requires, I invite you, in the name of the church, to the observance of a Holy Lent. The Prayer Book goes on to outline for us that this includes self-examination and repentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial, as well as reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. These are wonderful places to start. Last night, at the Spirited Sisters gathering after worship, we talked a little bit about this. And I shared that often in clergy circles, we ask if someone is a GUS or a TOM – meaning do you Give Up Something or do you Take On More? Both can be meaningful if done intentionally – with the goal of creating more space for you and God, putting more kindness and goodness into the world, or living your faith out loud more often. If you haven’t decided what your spiritual practice will be in this season – that’s okay. It’s not too late. Give it some thought. What intention might you hone in on? What would make your life better? And the lives of the people around you better? How can you contribute to God’s mission in the world? How can you honor the holy in you and in the world around you? If you’re stuck – I’d love to talk. Just send me a note.

I hope to see you on Sunday. As many of you know, things look a little different on Sundays in Lent. So our pattern changes up a bit. I know many of you are traveling over the next two weeks – know that you go with my prayers. Until we are together again, God loves you. And so do I.

Faithfully,
