Summer Plans

Dear friends and members of St. Matt’s,

Can you believe that this is July 4th weekend? We are well and truly into the summer. I hope that you’re all well and making good plans for refreshment and rejuvenation this weekend and throughout the summer. On Sunday, in our prayers, we’ll remember the nation’s birthday and give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy, even as we pray that we may yet become a place that is more faithful and more equitable. I’m including another prayer that you might keep with you for the weekend. This is the Prayer for the Nation:

Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

As we seek to live into this prayer, to renew and recommit ourselves to a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, we invite you join us in a summer read. As a congregation this summer, we’ll be reading “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Elizabeth Gilbert says this about the book,As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise.

Join us this summer as we learn about the land beneath our feet, the food we eat, and creatures great and small that are all around us. Let’s learn from the wisdom of those who were here before us. It’s a really wonderful read. In the fall, we’ll gather as a big group to discuss the book and share our experiences of reading over the summer. So, pick up a copy and take it with you wherever you’re going. It’s available on amazon and in many local bookstores. If you have questions, as always, please feel free to be in touch!

Faithfully,
