Pass the syrup — it’s time for Shrove Tuesday!
Celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday (also called “Fat Tuesday” in reference to Mardi Gras) is the day before our 40-day period of Lent begins. Its name comes from the Germanic-Old English word “shrive,” meaning absolve. And in this season of fasting and penitence, this was the day that Christians would go to be “shriven” by their confessor.
Historically, Shrove Tuesday also became a day for pre-fasting indulgence. In particular, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter, milk, sugar and eggs before Lent gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on this day.
Please join us for a Zoom pancake dinner at 6 PM on February 16th. You can order your pancake supper "kits" by emailing Jennifer Angerame. Kits will include pancake mix, syrup, Mardi Gras beads and maybe some other surprises! Feel free to get creative with your pancakes! Perhaps some pancake art you can share with the group? Zoom link will be posted on the parishioner page.
All kits will be available Tuesday Feb 16th in the circle at church.
