Hawaii
Dear friends and members of St. Matt’s,
I pray this note finds you well and enjoying August! I can’t believe we’re already here! Take your time and enjoy these last few deep breaths of summer before the busy-ness of the fall is upon us.
A few of you have asked me in this last week about how you can help folks in Hawaii after the devastation there. There are two immediate places where you can give. The first is always a safe way to help – Episcopal Relief and Development. This arm of the Episcopal Churches shows up on the ground and helps people in meaningful and concrete ways. They’re always a good option for us and they have set up an emergency relief fund for Lahaina. I also have a dear friend who is a UCC pastor and a child of Hawaii. Where he lives and works, the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ, has set up a special relief fund that he is confident will go directly to people on the ground. You could choose to give there as well.
In any case, please continue to keep the people of Maui in your prayers. They have experienced so much trauma and loss in these last days. Loss of life, loss of history, loss of natural resources. Among a great many other things. May God be present with them and may the love that comes from afar be a balm for their broken hearts. Thank you for reaching out, for praying for them, and for wanting to help.
Please take a careful look through our e-news this week. We have a few new dates and opportunities to share. Andrew has been working hard on a concert schedule for the Arts at St. Matthew’s. There’s more information about when we’ll discuss and reflect on our summer read. And keep in mind that we’ll worship this week with WPC – I’ll be preaching – and I hope to see you there!
Faithfully,
