Getting started!

Dear friends and members of St. Matt’s,

Suddenly, it feels like the fall, doesn’t it? I love this time of year. I’m always grateful when the temperature drops a little and the light starts to change. I just wish we could stay in this spot for longer! I don’t always love that it foreshadows the cold and dark of winter!

Another thing that I love is the beginning of our program year! We had a wonderful celebration on Sunday with lots of fun and really good food. Thanks to all who came and volunteered. It was a beautiful day and a great start to this new year. There is a lot of information in the e-news this week. Please take a careful look and mark your calendars for the auction, Andrew’s organ recital, events for children and youth, and adult forums that begin next week. We are off and running and I believe God delights in that!

I want to thank those of you who offered feedback on Sunday and the first part of this week about the new prayers that we’re trying in this season. As the Episcopal Church in Connecticut and the larger Episcopal Church enters into a season of prayer and care for our planet, we are trying out some newly approved prayers that call our attention to climate care as well. I heard wonderful feedback from so many on Sunday about these new words, about the new images and ideas they called to mind, and about the openness of some of the language. I agree. And I’d love to hear from more of you as we try on these prayers in this season. It may take you a few tries or some time to settle in before you know what you think – that’s okay! Sometimes when we use different words to pray, we experience God and our world in new ways. This is my hope for all of us.

I was so glad to have the Choir back with us on Sunday. And I’m grateful to Andrew for his hard work and the committee’s hard work on The Arts at St. Matthew’s series that started last weekend with that fantastic performance by Ryan Young and Matt Heaton. Thank you all.

What a wonderful year we have ahead of us in so many ways. I hope to see you on Sunday as the journey continues. Until then, God loves you. And so do I.

Faithfully,
