Confirmation Session 3 Re-cap: November 19, 2019
Last evening we had a jam-packed confirmation session in which our focus was on the Bible. While sharing a meal, we talked about the importance of story in our lives and some shared a few unique family stories. To ground us all in an overview of what the Bible is and how it came to be, we watch two brief videos, which you also may be interested in viewing to discuss with your confirmand (linked here):
These were followed with a Q&A and discussion of how Episcopalians read the Bible. The Hebrew Scriptures and our Christian (New) Testament are full of stories of God’s covenant with us, God’s people.
We then jumped into some stories of the Bible. Each confirmand was given a particular story from either the Hebrew Scriptures (Abraham, Moses, Ruth) or New Testament (Jesus’ birth, Jesus in the Temple, the Parable of the Lost Sheep, and the Conversion of Paul). In the process of reading their scripture story, many raised questions of new vocabulary and theological concepts. They each then presented key points of their biblical story to the whole group.
Here are some questions you can have to continue the conversation on the Bible with your confirmand:
- What book or story has been powerful, even life-changing for you? Why?
- How much do you feel you know about the Bible, the greatest story?
- Have you ever thought that you have a faith story worth telling?
Lastly, everyone left with an assignment to read the Gospel of Mark before our next session. Those who wanted a Bible took one with them; others said they had one at home. (We are using the NRSV which is the translation that is used during worship.)
Our next gathering of confirmands on Tuesday, December 10 (6:00-7:30pm) where we will talk about Jesus!
