A note of grief and support.
Dear friends,
Many of you will have heard by now that a young man, a student at Wilton High School, has tragically passed away. Superintendent Kevin Smith has been in touch with many in town this morning, including the clergy, and has assured us that they are doing everything they can to support our kids and families during this time. I have no doubt that WHS will provide a safe space for our kids to process and grieve. And as always, I'm grateful for the ways this town pulls together, to offer love and support, to be present for each other in times of need. I am already seeing signs of that love, and I'm grateful for the many ways you are caring for each other and for our neighbors.
Shannon, Samantha, Julie and I met this morning to start thinking about how we can support our kids and families during this time as well. Know that we are here to support you and your kids if you need anything at all. You can reach out to me or to Samantha at any time if you need to talk or if your kids need some space to process and feel supported. And know that we are working together to find ways to open some sacred space for our kids, to let them share and engage if they feel called and moved to do so. I'm also here to talk with you as parents, grandparents, teachers, and as members of this community, if you are feeling shaken.
Our faith reminds us that life is a gift. That each breath, each moment is a gift from God. And that we do not know, as the Prayer Book reminds us, about the changes and chances of this life. None of us knows what may be around the corner, which is why it's so important for us to love God and each other now. What we do know is that the God who loves you is always with you. And we know that Jesus, our Savior, had while he was here on earth a special love of children. So, our hope as Christians is that life is changed in death, but life is not ended. The cross stands empty to remind us that death never has the last word. God's love is so strong that death is defeated. And God stores up for us life everlasting.
I know that you will join me in prayer for this young man, for his family, and for all those who are mourning his loss. And I know that of your lovingkindness you will support them and all who grieve in this community with your whole hearts. Hold the ones you love close. Let this community hold you close. And know that God is holding all of us. Wherever you are on this day - in this moment - I hope you'll find comfort in our faith, in the promises of God, in the hope that all people are gathered into God's loving embrace. And if you or your kids want to talk about that, then I hope you'll be in touch. We are, as ever, here for you. God loves you. And so do we.
Faithfully,
