2024 Begins
Dear friends and members of St. Matt’s,
I hope that you are finding ways to enjoy these last days of the Christmas season and that you had a very happy celebration of the new year. I have some special news to share with you about a visitor to our worship this week. And the strange way it came to be.
I had rather an odd turning of the year – as I spent New Year’s Day in the hospital having emergency gallbladder surgery. Not quite what I had in mind! Praise God for science and medicine, for doctors and nurses who take good care of us and ease our pain. Some of you may have experienced that particular pain – so you know it will be a few days before I’m back on my feet. I will miss you on Sunday. And as I alerted our diocesan leaders to my situation, as a Priest does, it was suggested that our Bishop Diocesan might “supply” for me on Sunday.
So, while I’m not able to be with you for worship this week, you will have the wonderful opportunity to gather around the altar with Bishop Jeff. As our new(ish!) Bishop, consecrated in October of 2022, Bishop Jeff hasn’t been to St. Matthew’s yet. So, we’ve tinkered with the service some – and the Vestry is planning a special coffee hour. And the only other thing we really need is for you to come make the Bishop welcome in the way that only you can. Introduce him to the big, wide, loving heart of this place and to all the ways God is present in our life together. This is a really special moment, and I’m deeply grateful to the Bishop for his presence with you. I hope you will make a special effort to be present on Sunday – I know that he’ll be glad to meet you – and I think that you will be very glad to meet and get to know him.
I will look very much forward to seeing you on January 14th, if not before. Our year will begin to get busy again in the next few weeks – so keep an eye out for all the opportunities to serve, grow, and connect. I wish you all the blessings of the new year. And I pray God’s special blessing on you and your families as you begin this calendar year. Until we are together again, God loves you. And so do I.
Faithfully,
–Marissa +
