Father, your people worship you with many voices and sounds, in times of joy and sorrow. Move us to express the wonder, the power, and the glory of your creation in the music we make and in the songs we sing. The Book of Common Prayer

Our parish choirs are vital to our community. Their beautiful music, deep dedication, sure leadership and contagious enthusiasm enrich our worship experience. In session from September through June, the parish choirs rehearse once a week and provide musical leadership at the Sunday 10am celebrations of the Holy Eucharist as well as a variety of holy days, evensongs, and special services. The choirs are also regularly involved in the Arts at St. Matthew’s series.
The Boys and Girls Choir sings at least twice a month and is open to any child from 2nd-6th grade. The Youth Choir sings most Sundays and is open to young people from 7th-12th grades. The Adult Choir is assisted by 5 professional section leaders and sings most Sundays. Rehearsing only on Sunday mornings, our Summer Choir is open to all ages and provides leadership during July and August.

The parish’s primary instrument is a new pipe organ built by the Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence, Kansas. This splendid three manual, fifty-two rank organ was played for the first time in public on Sunday, January 31, 2010.
We also regularly feature our restored 1929 Steinway grand piano. The parish owns a two-octave set of Whitechapel English handbells which are used for special occasions. Various instrumentalists, both from within the parish and guest professionals, add additional variety to our experience.
Rodney Ayers has been our Director of Music since 1993. Please contact him if you would like further information or would like to participate in the music ministry.
Music is an important and vibrant component of worship and parish life at St. Matthews. This ministry is strongly valued by our congregation as a whole, and includes children, youth and adults as equal partners in music making and leadership. As a musical parish, we place great emphasis on congregational singing through hymns, psalms and service music. Many parishioners choose to offer their gifts further by singing in one of the choirs.
